Our company

The Information Company is an amalgam of offline and online experience and skills, and is poised to become a major player in the software, web solutions, media & content, and design businesses. Very few companies in the world have the combination of diverse but related expertise that we have.

 

The Information Company Pvt Ltd (TIC), incorporated in March 1999, focuses on serving business information and information technology needs in the Internet age. From the project stage in mid-1998 the promoters focused on the needs of the corporate sector, and geared the organisation to cater to large, quality-conscious corporate organisations.

In each of its areas of operation, TIC has tried and tested products and skills. The company has four divisions (plus a division-in-the-making). There are strong synergies between the divisions, where the competencies required for successful operations are leveraged across the organisation. The company has also used in-house training and multi-tasking to handle a much larger volume of work than would otherwise be possible to handle for an organisation its size.

OUR DIVISIONS

Web solutions: This division was  launched with the acquisition in early 2000 of our first client, the Tata Group, India's biggest private sector business group, for whom we began with a maintenance contract for the group website, www.tata.com, from where we quickly redesigned the website in July 2000. We have been maintaining the site since then.

We redesigned the website in 2005, to align it with the Tata Group's changed business imperatives. The site is updated daily and shows up very well on search engines. Even though it does not have any direct consumer or investor stakes, the traffic to the site has been growing exponentially. It has been the most resounding success in the Indian corporate website area. 

The division has provided its services to some of India's biggest and most reputed business groups, including Aditya Birla, Murugappa and Godrej. See our client list.

Software: After a couple of hard knocks in 1999-2000, when we tried to get a database developed by an outside software developer, and were let down badly, we decided we must build our own software team for mission-critical work. Since then we have spent a huge amount of time researching business software applications and developing our own software, first for ourselves, and then for our clients.

Since 2000 we have built capabilities to create software for the corporate sector in the areas of content management, information and knowledge management, marketing and sales, HR, and procurement. We have developed best-of-breed products in these areas. Check out our software capabilities.

In addition, we have created two products, one in the information management area, and the other in the requisitioning and procurement area, which are unique.

Media & content: This division was the first to take off, with the launch of www.domain-b.com, India's first and biggest online business magazine. We then launched www.prdomain.com, which is the best product in its category in India. These two websites offer over 40,000 pages of business information relating to organisations and events in India and the world.

This division also syndicates content to clients, including print publications.

Design: This division feeds the web solutions operations and also provides services to corporate clients in the area of creation of print and multimedia collateral. See our client list.

Consulting & research: This division-in-the-making derives its strength from the decades of experience our team has in offline as well as online operations and in strategic thinking. We have provided research and consulting services as part of our web solutions. These services include website audits, benchmarking, information architecture and online strategies.

Offline publications: The publications we have created (and continue to create) range from high-quality journals for top management (e.g. Tata Review) and several internal manuals on such subjects as innovation, corporate social responsibility and heritage to annual reports and brochures.

Our clients include some of the biggest and most reputed business groups in India, including the Tata, Aditya Birla, Essar and Kirloskar groups.

Our team has people with several decades of experience in writing and editing magazines, newspapers, and marketing collateral. Our team members, who come from editorial as well as marketing and communication backgrounds, help our clients deliver credible, well-written content to their customers, investors, employees and the public.

Our design team has many years of experience in designing and producing books, magazines, newsletters, brochures, annual reports and other corporate collateral, both in print and multimedia formats.

Ethics

The Information Company Pvt Ltd believes in doing business the ethical way. Some well-wishers have asked us why we don't become more "pragmatic" and build our revenues by hook or by crook. We'd rather be small.

Customer focus

At TIC we believe that we are there because of the customer. We even have heated arguments with some customers on strategic as well as design issues, because we believe it is our job to get them to do their best. We haven't lost any customers because of our argumentativeness.

We believe we are successful when our customers make business gains. Our web strategy, design and development are geared to expanding the business of our clients and meeting their objectives.  
Quality assurance

We believe that we should take up client assignments only if we can deliver quality. We would rather not take up an assignment than compromise on this.

We have also refused to bid for projects whenever we felt that we did not have the capabilities to deliver or to deliver on time. 
Organisational culture

The Information Company Pvt Ltd is an equal-opportunity employer, in which people from different ethnic and religious backgrounds work together as one. About half of our staff are women.

We work informally, as a flat organisation in which every  member of the staff has a right to an opinion that may turn out to be more correct than that of the managing director, and in which compartments dissolve into project teams. 
Learning organisation
We have spent years on research and on learning -- and then some more on R&D to develop new applications in our areas of operation. We are constantly checking out new technologies, evaluating them, and picking what suits us and our customers. 
We aim to be at least a couple of steps ahead of our customers so that we can surprise them with delivery of more than they expect. 
Ambition

We believe in pushing the envelope in everything we do. We aim to be one of the best companies in the world in each of our areas of operation. The only limits we acknowledge are ethics and legality.
